Phase Two of the Roy Duncan Park (Van Lang) was installed last week as part of a three phase improvement to the park that began with a community consultation in early 2008.
The new additions to the park in Phase II includes three new benches, one trash receptacle, a flag pole and a new fence. A new gate will be located in the north- west corner of the playground gives easy access to the park from the entire neighbourhood . A community bulletin board will be installed in the next couple of weeks. New play structures, a gazebo and water pad were built as part of phase one of the revitalization of the park that was officially opened June 2009.
The project is being funded through the City of Ottawa’s Cash-in Lieu of Parkland funding. Large developments must set aside land for recreation or pay the equivalent value in cash to the city. Sixty per cent of this fund is turned back to the ward where the development occurs.
The Westboro Beach Community Association worked with the Parks and Recreation Department and Councillor Christine Leadman to apply for the changes to the park. Plans are underway to secure funding for six trees at the northern end of the soccer field as well as a replacement to an ash tree near the walkway.
